When in Rome...

Our next port stop as we ventured through the Mediterranean was Civitavecchia, about 50 miles from the ancient city of Rome, Italy!
It took some coordinating to get from the ship to the coach pick up, but we made our way into the city after about 90 minutes. We met our private guides who took us via golf carts to see the sites.
Our first stop was to see and go into the Colosseum. It was the hottest day on record for 2024 and we nearly melted as we heard tales of the ancient amphitheater that once hosted hand-to-hand combat with gladiators and contests between men and animals!
Our next stop was the Trevi Fountain where we snapped a few pictures and those who believe threw a coin backwards over their left shoulder to ensure they return to Rome. Legend says if you throw two coins, you will find romance!
We also stopped by the Terrazza Viale del Belvedere and the Spanish Steps. If you find yourself in Rome in the evening, the Terrazza (Terrace/observation deck) is a great place to watch the sunset over the Eternal City!
We didn't have time to visit the Vatican, but many of our family and friends were able to take an incredible tour. They described the Vatican Museum and Sistine Chapel as breathlessly beautiful, but were disappointed they did not see Pope Francis. Maybe next time!
The only thing left to do was to feed the crew! Everyone was starving by the time the golf tour ended. Where should we eat? Well, our guides suggested a local spot near the Spanish Steps. Our guide said to try the pumpkin gnocchi, we did, and it was delicious. Our gang also enjoyed steak with rosemary, meatballs, eggplant parmesan, homemade pasta with red sauce and bacon and Carbonara, made gluten free!
We had enough time to have lunch at Ristorante Al 34. The dishes are traditional, Roman and Italian, and the food is delicious. If you order gluten free pasta, just allow a little extra time to prepare. I will definitely be back!
